History Of The Internet – Internet Attacks

As the internet was firstly a network used primarily by the Army and various university’s, what I do find captivating is how much the internet has become commercialised in the past 20 years. In 1995 the internet became more commercialised due to the creation of encryption which made the internet safer to use. I feel by observation that the internet has become increasing popular in the past 10 years due to the creation of search engines and social media. Isn’t it strange however that in 20 years, internet hackers still find ways to manipulate the system, in order to steal users personal details?

The link provided above is an example of an internet attack, carried out by a 15 year old. An example of how worrying the internet can still be manipulated. While new social media platforms and internet banking becomes increasingly popular, the risk for further attacks becomes ever so likely. Do you not think that with the increasing amount of internet users putting their details on the internet, more should be done to protect these details? Hackers seems to be able to get around new protections that are put in place, should more be done? Legislations put in place do prosecute those who hack, but it seems that over a period of 20 years, internet attacks are still a big threat.

  1. Hi Lewis, I agree with the points you have raised but I don’t think there’s a lot we can do about a bored 15 year old genius who decided to hack a website. Do you see this as a bigger threat than companies that sell our personal information to third parties?

  2. Cyber security is a rather growing concern. It is one thing when it is used for embezzlement or such kind, but it is fatal when used for criminal purposes. Thank you for bringing this up. This however also brings to my mind the question of cyber surveillance, when government or ‘people-in-power’ might use the internet to control our lives. Can the internet become a Propaganda? Either way, how do we save ourselves from internet attacks? Be it to our privacy or our existence.
